“The secret, I’ve found, is to listen to the individual patient and understanding what her or his expectations are. Being able to improve the lives of my patients, is what I find most rewarding about my work.”
I am a member of the Association of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons of South Africa (APRASSA), and I provide all of my patients with the highest quality of personalised care. I strive for the best result in every case, with the ambition of improving the self-confidence of my patients.
SURGICAL EXPERTISE
Reconstructive Breast Surgery
Being a female plastic surgeon has equipped me with the unique ability to empathise with patients who approach me for breast reconstruction following breast cancer and other breast-related surgery. I bring together compassion and experience to afford these patients comprehensive care, whilst doing my utmost to ensure a favourable outcome. This extends to theatre where I work with an all-female team. I am further able to assist patients should they require secondary breast surgery.
Reconstructive surgery following Skin Cancer Surgery
Working with referring dermatologists, I excise common skin cancers and reconstruct the defect, particularly on the face, leaving minimal scars and avoiding a skin graft where possible. I believe my patients reap the benefit of my attention to detail and careful tissue handling.
Cosmetic Surgery
I have a special interest in a number of procedures including:
Breast Surgery – Breast augmentation, reduction and lift | Correction of breast asymmetry | Gynaecomastia
Body-contouring surgery – Mini- and Full Abdominoplasty (Tummy tuck) | Liposuction | Labiaplasty
Facial Plastic surgery – Eyebrow contouring surgery | upper and lower Blepharoplasty | Otoplasty
General – Removal of moles and other benign lesions | Scar revision | Treatment of Keloids
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
I studied medicine at Stellenbosch University and obtained my MBChB degree in 1989. I performed my internship in Pietermaritzburg at Grey’s and Northdale Hospitals. After travelling, including sailing in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, I spent four years in England where I completed my general surgical rotation and obtained my Fellowship in Surgery: FRCS in 1996. After qualifying as a general surgeon, I spent six months working in the prestigious Plastic Surgery Department of the Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwest London. It was here that my passion for reconstructive surgery was awakened. I specialised in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand and qualified in 2001, receiving my FCS (Plast) (SA) degree.
I spent six years as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon and Head of Plastic Surgery at Helen Joseph Hospital where I gained invaluable experience in breast reconstructive surgery. I played an instrumental role in setting up the first oncoplastic breast unit in the state sector in Gauteng in 2003. I have since had the opportunity of being part of breast multidisciplinary units, this time within the private sector.

MORE ON BREAST CARE
I am fortunate to work with a select few outstanding breast surgeons.
At Sandton Mediclinic, I share my rooms with Dr Lucienne van Schalkwyk. I have partnered with Dr Sarah Nietz and medical oncologist, Dr Ronwyn van Eeden to form Park Lane Breast Care, offering a holistic service to patients who are going through their breast cancer journey.
